WAP (Wireless Application
Protocol) is a method of letting wireless devices, such as mobile phones and
hand-held devices, view the Internet. WAP is at the evolutionary stage that
"The Web" was about 5 years ago. Business owners now have the ability to get
their products and services in front of millions of wireless users they were
unable to reach before. Whether or not you have a standard "wireline" HTML
website, you need to invest in the creation of a WAP site. The reason for this
is because the browsers used by wireless devices CANNOT read the same language
that is used to read the websites that we are able to access now from a desktop
computer. Browsers used by wireless devices can only read WML (Wireless Markup
Language), much like browsers used by wireline computers can only read HTML
(Hyper Text Markup Language).
So what is this WAP thing anyway?
By now, you probably have a lot questions about WAP...what is it exactly...what
does it mean to me...how will it affect my business...what if I already have an
existing wireline website...and so on. Knowing this, we have supplied a list of
the most frequently asked questions about this wonderful new technology. If you
don't see a question within the list, feel free to contact us.
Why do
I need a WAP website?
Standard HTML wireline websites (like the one
you're viewing now) CANNOT be read by the browsers used on the millions (soon
to be billions) of wireless devices that are accessing the Internet. The WAP
browsers used by wireless devices can only read WML (Wireless Markup Language),
whereas browsers (like the one you are using now) only reads HTML (Hyper Text
Markup Language). This means that in order to get in front of all of these
wireless users, you MUST have a WAP website. Our experienced staff can create
both an HTML site, as well as a WML site to ensure that you get the maximum
exposure.
How long does it take to create a WAP website?
Our 5
page WAP website is guaranteed to be created and online within 48 business
hours. Contact us today for additional information on the turn around time for
larger WAP sites.
Can you put images on my WAP site?
Yes, we
can put images on your WAP site, but only in black and white (technically black
and green). There are two restrictions. The first is that there are very few
mobile phones that have color displays. Secondly, because the speed of a
wireless unit is quite slow compared to a wireline modem, images take a long
time to load. As you know, most people will not wait the required amount of
time until the image loads.
Do WAP websites have the same capabilities
as those of wireline websites?
Not entirely. Today, WAP sites are
primarily limited to plain text with some simple styling features like BOLD and
italics and minimal graphics. Monochrome images on displays that are typically
100 by 40 pixels. No audio and no fancy animations yet. However, this will
change, just like the Internet changed and developed over the past few years.
How will having an existing wireline website effect my WAP
website?
Your HTML wireline website and WAP website can work together
to help your company gain the exposure it needs to succeed. Much like the
wireline website, some of the goals of the WAP website is to draw traffic and
attention, to get in front of your prospects and to ultimately get the sale.
Having a wireline site is good, but without a WAP site that is being marketed,
your company will not be exposed to the millions (soon to be billions) of
wireless users.
Do I need to get a separate domain name for my new WAP
website?
No, it's not entirely necessary. However, the same benefits
for getting a unique domain name for your wireline site applies to the WAP
world. As an added value, we offer a service that will allow you to use your
unique domain name for both your HTML site and your WAP site. When someone
types in your unique domain name, the server will be able to detect if they are
using a wireline computer or a wireless unit and then display the appropriate
type of website. If you would like another domain name or need your first one,
visit our hosting page, or click the link to Register.com at the bottom of this
page.
Can a phone number on a WAP site be dialed by the phone that is
viewing it?
In theory, yes. We can program your site with embedded code
that will allow viewers to dial your site from their phone "automatically", but
is still in the experimental stages. Additionally, each phone on the market has
their own ways in which they implement these codes. So, until there are some
standards regarding this and other features, it's best left alone.
How
large can a WAP page be?
The rule of thumb is that a WAP page should
not exceed 1400 bytes when compiled. When we create your WAP site, we test it
to be sure that it does not exceed this limit, as well as ensure that it loads
as quickly as possible.
